DIALOGUE #35
DIALOGUE #35

Date: 16 November 2024
Time: 19:00 CET
Address: Stiftung Bartels Fondation “zum kleinen Markgräflerhof”, Augustinergasse 17, 4051 Basel

I have been invited by curator, Parvez Imam to take part in DIALOGUE #35 in Basel, on Saturday, 16th November, from 19.00 h.

I will be discussing my interest in areas of life that people find hard to talk about – death, disease, waste to name few; The ways humanity exploits and destroys nature, including through urbanisation, consumerism, disposable society and its hunger for more resources; The choice of materials - from the ordinary to ephemeral to the highly precious ones; caul fat, intestines, hearts, trees and gold - forms a critical component in my practice where I trigger the sense of fragility of nature and make the viewer think, respond and react. In this session of The Dialogue, I will share also my current engagement and explorations during my ongoing residency in Basel.

I am in a Visual Arts Residency at the Stiftung Bartels Fondation, in Basel.

National Gallery Macedonia: When Art and Science Overlap
National Gallery Macedonia: When Art and Science Overlap

Date: Monday, September 27, 2021
Opening Hours: 17:00 – 18:00 BST
Address: Online – Live streaming from National Gallery Macedonia - book your place here.

Inter- and Trans-disciplinarity have recently become distinguishing elements of contemporary art. When borders between disciplines blend together and are erased very often results are enriching for both disciplines and result in work neither could have predicted. A particular example of a collaboration between practitioners with different specialisms will be the focus of this talk. The artist Elpida Hadzi-Vasileva and the scientist Prof. Alastair Forbes will talk about their work together, with moderation by Ana Frangovska.

Participants:
Elpida Hadzi-Vasileva – Prof. Alastair Forbes (interdisciplinary collaboration)

Elpida Hadzi-Vasileva (born 1971, Kavadarci, North Macedonia) is a Macedonian-born artist based in UK. She has exhibited extensively and realised numerous commissions nationally and internationally, in gallery spaces, museums and within the public realm. Hadzi-Vasileva was selected by the Ministry of Culture to represent Macedonia at the 55th Venice Biennale in 2013, with Ana Frangovska, curator at the National Gallery of Macedonia. She graduated in Sculpture from the Royal College of Art, London, in 1998.

Alastair Forbes is Visiting Professor at the University of Tartu in Estonia. He is also Emeritus Professor of Medicine at the University of East Anglia, where he was until August 2020 Research Director and Clinical Gastroenterologist. His scientific work is mainly in intestinal failure and nutrition in inflammatory bowel disease, but he is also committed to medical education, and has a career-long interest in ethical issues and other points of interface with society more generally. He was proud to play an active role in the staged performances of Incontinentals, a light-hearted approach to the serious problem of faecal incontinence. He was previously at UCL and at St. Mark's Hospital in London. He has been Education Director of the European Nutrition Society, General Secretary of the British Society of Gastroenterology, and Chairman of the British Association for Clinical Nutrition. He has written more than 250 original papers, many reviews and contributions to guidelines, and is widely cited.

Participation is open to everyone.
Macedonian translation will also be provided.

Opening Hours: 13:00 – 14:00 BST
Address: Online – Live streaming from Lakeside - book your place here

Join us for an interview with Elpida Hadzi-Vasileva on Monday 12 April, 1pm. Whilst in conversation with Head of Visual Arts Programming, Neil Walker, Elpida will discuss the processes of inspiration and creation. Exploring and experimenting with highly unusual materials, Elpida creates beauty from the most unlikely of places.

In 2016, she created a new body of work for the Djanogly Gallery inspired by medical research into digestive diseases undertaken at the @uniofnottingham. The exhibition 'Making Beauty' (2016) also included her first UK showing of a major artwork commissioned by the Vatican for the Venice Biennale in 2015, and a large-scale installation exploring near-death experience. The featured work incorporated pigs’ caul fat and cow stomach that were transformed from a perishable waste product into a sublimely beautiful material via a chemical process similar to embalming.
